Workshop: Optimizing Research Security and Enhancing Institutional Biosecurity Practices

The workshop “Optimizing Research Security: Enhancing Institutional Biosecurity Practices” was successfully held from 8 to 10 May 2026 at IRC InMed in Palić, Serbia.

The three-day event brought together professionals, institutional representatives, and experts to discuss key aspects of research security, institutional biosecurity, risk assessment, and responsible research governance.

Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in presentations, roundtable discussions, tabletop exercises, panel sessions, and practical scenario-based activities. The programme focused on emerging technologies, DURC-related risks, institutional risk management, local and regional biosecurity perspectives, and international good practices.

Special attention was given to strengthening institutional awareness and preparedness through sessions on Know-Your-Collaborator / Know-Your-Investor approaches, research security oversight, and practical mechanisms for improving institutional governance.

The workshop provided a valuable platform for open exchange, regional cooperation, and the identification of good practices and areas for future improvement. Participants actively contributed to discussions, shared institutional experiences, and explored practical approaches to enhancing biosecurity culture within research environments.

We would like to thank all participants, speakers, facilitators, and partners for their valuable contributions and active engagement.

The successful completion of this workshop represents an important step toward strengthening research security and enhancing institutional biosecurity practices in the region.
